3rd Annual Alcanzando Metas Graduation Ceremony on June 9, 2009 at 6:30 pm; the topic “Teen parents reaching their goals”. The event will be held in the Sumner School Museum and Archives located at 1201 17th Street NW (17th and M Sts) Washington DC 20036
The Alcanzando Metas (Achieving Goals) Foundation is a nonprofit corporation recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax exempt organization. The Foundation's mission is to foster excellence in mathematics, science, technology and language for the advancement of Hispanic women students.
This school year 2008-2009 Alcanzando Metas has focused on helping high school teen mom because:
· A report from the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy showns that between 2005 and 2006 the teen birth rate increased 3% - the first increase in 15 years.
· The Latino teen birth and pregnancy rates are almost twice the national average and have declined about half as fast as the national rates.
· At present, 53% of Latinas will become pregnant at least once by age 20
· The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy also shows that the birth rate for Latinas aged 15-19 increased in 16 of 37 reporting states and the District of Columbia between 1990 and 2005.
For these reasons and others, The Alcanzando Metas foundation continues to focus on helping the Latino community and minority in its efforts to help The greater aim of the Foundation is to help these young people become productive citizens for the global, high-tech American society of the 21st century.
